Pack price

A pack price is a price stored for one pack unit: a unit, a minimum quantity, and an amount per that unit. A line in that unit resolves against the pack rows before it falls back to the catalog.

What it is

A pack price is a price stored for one pack unit. Each row names a unit, a minimum quantity, and an amount per that unit, plus the dates it is valid for. A dozen row prices the dozen. A master case row prices the master case. A case row prices the case.

The pack price sits in the middle of the pricing sequence. When a sales order line needs a price, the server tries the private customer price, then the customer price list, then the pack price, then the catalog. The pack price is the step that knows the pack.

Why it matters

Packs price differently. A dozen often prices differently than a case even before any discount, and a master case differently again. A single price per product cannot say that. Pack rows let the price follow the pack the customer actually ordered.

The minimum quantity is what makes a pack price a volume price. A dozen at 0.75 from 50 dozen is a different offer than a dozen at full price below 50. The row says where the volume starts, and the line that meets it gets the volume price.

A worked example

A fictional product carries two pack prices: master case 18.99 from 1 master case, and dozen 0.75 from 50 dozen. A line of 2 master cases resolves against the master case row: 18.99 per master case. A line of 60 dozen meets the dozen row minimum and resolves at 0.75 per dozen. A line of 40 dozen does not meet the dozen minimum, so it resolves further down the sequence.

How DockingWare does it

Pack price rows carry the unit, the minimum quantity, the amount, and the effective dates. A row applies only inside its dates. The resolution picks the row whose minimum the quantity meets, and the line keeps the price in the unit it was priced in.

Questions

What is a pack price?
A price stored for one pack unit: a unit, a minimum quantity, and an amount per that unit. A dozen row prices the dozen; a master case row prices the master case.
What is the minimum quantity on a pack price?
The volume from which that row applies. A dozen row with a minimum of 50 applies to lines of 50 dozen or more. The largest minimum the quantity meets wins inside the pack price step.
How is a pack price different from a quantity break?
It is the same shape: a price that applies from a quantity. The minimum on a pack price row is the break for that step, and the break is never borrowed from a different step than the price it discounts.
